About Session

Whereas internal audit is a well-established function in government, performing audits of law enforcement agencies is a relatively new development. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an understanding of the law enforcement audit process and how it can be used to improve law enforcement agencies, increase transparency, reduce civil and criminal liability, and strengthen public trust.

  1. Understand the differences between law enforcement auditing and auditing other functions of government.
  2. Learn about the unique requirements for auditors that analyze and evaluate law enforcement operations, all within the constructs of GAGAS.
  3. Learn how to develop objectives, scope, and methodology, and how to identify, collect and analyze data necessary to make recommendations for improving law enforcement operations.
  4. Presenters will discuss real life examples of audits and how they were used to measure compliance, identify areas for improvement, and make recommendations to mitigate risk.
