The world has changed — and so must our approach to professional skepticism. In an environment shaped by artificial intelligence, algorithmic advice, synthetic media, and information overload, the old model of skepticism — mechanical checklists and generalized doubt — no longer protects judgment. This focused two-hour seminar introduces a dynamic, evidence-based model of skeptical reasoning built for the realities of modern professional work, revealing the hidden psychological and contextual forces that shape what we accept, question, and overlook.

Participants explore the three dimensions of skeptical reasoning and learn to tune their thinking to match the reliability of evidence, the demands of the situation, and the culture of the organization around them. Through live demonstrations and interactive exercises, attendees discover how to raise their skeptical “signal-to-noise” ratio — sharpening the ability to tell real signals from noise without simply becoming more distrustful of everything.

Drawing on current research in judgment, decision-making, and the psychology of trust and misinformation, the session shows why the most skeptical professionals are not the most cynical but the best calibrated. Whether you are an auditor, analyst, investigator, executive, or advisor, this session will reframe what it means to think critically in a world where information can no longer be taken at face value.

Major Subjects

  • The three dimensions of skeptical reasoning
  • Why “more doubt” is not “better skepticism”: calibration over cynicism
  • Tuning the skeptical “signal-to-noise” ratio and evaluating evidence reliability
  • How orientation and epistemic stance shape skeptical strategy
  • Recalibrating skepticism for AI, automation, and synthetic media
  • Recognizing and correcting the hidden biases that erode skepticism

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Apply a three-dimensional model of skepticism to improve the accuracy of professional judgments
  • Distinguish discrimination — telling signal from noise — from mere doubt, and tune skepticism to the reliability and validity of evidence
  • Adapt skeptical strategy to situational and organizational context, including AI- and technology-assisted decisions
  • Identify and counteract cognitive biases — such as overconfidence, anchoring, and automation bias — that undermine skeptical judgment
  • Employ practical calibration techniques, such as considering the opposite, to strengthen everyday decisions
